About

Count Alex von Svoboda.
Internationally acclaimed artist, sculptor, and designer.

Born in Austria, April 16, 1929, Alex was immersed in art as a child who’s grandfather (August Roeseler, 1866-1934) was an internationally known fine arts and commercial artist, and cartoonist from Munich, Germany.   Inspired, Alex went on to study fine arts in Paris, Rome and Vienna.

As a young man pursuing his dreams after Word War II, Alex traveled to the United States and then Canada, where he became a commercial illustrator in Toronto.  Furthering his career, he then worked for a company that imported marble and mosaic.  This is where he was able to explore his talents in sculpture and much more.  His intense creativity and imagination, plus his versatility in art and design enabled him to open his own studio north of Toronto (Svoboda International Designs) where he was able to create freelanced art commissions worldwide.  These included sculptures in marble, wood, bronze, steel and other metals, fountains, murals, mosaics, and stained glass windows, architecture and interior design.  Alex has been commended by two Popes for his massive amount of liturgical work including mosaics, murals, church interiors and other artwork in over 250 churches throughout North America.  Commissioned art and design was business by day.  Evenings were spent painting at his leisure.

Alex enjoys painting in tempra, watercolour, and oil.  His early works included large, imaginative abstracts. However, due to his extensive travel, Alex’s paintings grew to concentrate on depicting the people, landscape and architecture he had seen around the world.  Sharing everlasting memories of beautiful people, interesting places and fantastic architecture by painting who he met and what he saw.  Alex’s paintings have been seen in art shows, galleries and archives, as well as private and corporate collections all over the world.

In the last few years Alex has spent more time focusing on his artistic passion through painting with watercolors and tempra expressing his love of natural beauty by painting landscapes of North America and the Bahamas.  His ability to create intensity of colour and his attention to the subtleties of light, shadow and reflection are now trademarks of his most recent works.

In his retirement, this renewed focus has made Alex busier than ever.  Putting his fame aside, Alex is still active in the art community and has also written an inspirational book of memoirs.  Last year at the University of Dayton, Ohio, Alex in his 79th year, presented Hope is the Last Thing to Die; A Showcase of the Life and Art of Count Alex von Svoboda, sharing excerpts from his book and living inspiration with those who share the love of art and life.  It’s Alex’s charitable way of giving back to the world that has been so generous to him.

Alex still graciously accepts limited invitations to display selected groups of his paintings in upcoming shows.  Please contact tbull@sympatico.ca for more details.
